David Udell is Founder and Executive Director of the National Center for Access to Justice, ncforaj.org, a research and policy organization based at Fordham Law School that relies on data and advocacy to build a more just and equitable society. David guides NCAJ’s initiatives, including: i) Legal Empowerment & Roles Beyond Lawyers, supporting the movement to enable people to obtain legal aid from individuals who are not lawyers; ii) the Justice Index, justiceindex.org, relying on data and technology to promote best polices for access to justice (including for curbing excessive governmental reliance on fines and fees, and for expanding language access, disability access, self help access, and attorney access); iii) the A2J Summit Collection, publishing articles by leading activists and advocates on the progress of the access to justice movement; iv) the Guide for Tracking Outcomes, describing best practices for providers and funders to document civil legal aid outcomes; and v) a National Science Foundation Workshop engaging social scientists from diverse disciplines to grow the field of access to justice research. David is a co-director of the school-wide A2J Initiative at Fordham Law School with Jonathan Lippman and Dean Matthew Diller). He has served as Founder and Executive Director of the Justice Program of the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU Law School; Senior Attorney at Legal Services for the Elderly (NYC); and Managing Attorney at Mobilization for Justice (NYC).
