Amy Sankaran is the University of Michigan Law School’s director of externship and pro bono programs. In her externship capacity, Professor Sankaran serves as the externship professor for full-time and part-time externships, including programs in South Africa and India. As director of the pro bono program, Professor Sankaran identifies pro bono projects needing law student assistance and then matches students to those needs. She also runs several initiatives to encourage students’ on-going commitment to pro bono. Professor Sankaran received her BA from Missouri State University and her JD from Michigan Law. After graduating, she served as a law clerk to The Hon. Arthur Tarnow of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan; as an associate at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, LLP in Washington, D.C.; and as an adoption attorney at the Children's Law Center in Washington, D.C. She returned to the Law School in 2005.
