Mary Gilg is the deputy director of the Homeless Action Center (HAC), a position she has held since 2016. HAC provides public benefits advocacy to Alameda County, California, residents with mental and physical disabilities, including SSI and SSDI benefits, General Assistance, CalWORKs, Medi-Cal, and CalFresh. Since Mary started at HAC in 2007, it has grown from a small agency with two offices of 10 attorneys and advocates to an agency of three offices with 50 attorneys and more than 70 employees. Mary has been working exclusively with people with mental health disabilities since 2005, when she was a senior attorney with the Mental Health Advocacy Project, a program of the Law Foundation of Silicon Valley. Mary started her legal career as a trial attorney with Federal Defenders of San Diego, Inc., after earning her JD from Georgetown University Law Center.
