Rubina Mustafa

Detroit Justice Center
Senior Staff Attorney
Detroit MI
Rubina S. Mustafa works as a senior staff attorney with the Legal Services Practice team at the Detroit Justice Center, joining DJC in January 2019. Rubina’s work furthers the mission of DJC to overcoming barriers created by incarceration, chronic poverty, and homelessness. Rubina’s practice areas are focused on defense work in misdemeanor and traffic matters and advocacy in family law matters for her clients. Ms. Mustafa has 25 years of legal experience practicing appellate law, criminal law, constitutional law, family law, and juvenile law. Before DJC, Rubina worked with the Michigan Children’s Law Center in the Wayne County Juvenile Court. She represented children in neglect and delinquency court proceedings and advocated for children’s needs in education and out-of-home placements. The Foster Care Review Board named Ms. Mustafa as the 2009 Lawyer-Guardian ad Litem of the Year. Rubina also worked as a staff attorney with the Detroit Center for Family Advocacy, the first multidisciplinary legal aid practice focused on reducing the number of children in foster care. Rubina also worked on specialty court dockets and court improvement task forces. Preceding her child welfare career, Rubina was proud to serve as an assistant defender with the State Appellate Defender, advocating for more than 300 clients in appeal of their criminal conviction and sentence. Ms. Mustafa has served on the state and executive boards of the Women Lawyers’ Association of Michigan and as president of the Association’s Wayne Region, as chair of the Grosse Ile Community Recreation Commission, and as an at-large member on the state board of the ACLU of Michigan.
